Director of Music for St Philip’s, Kelsall Cheshire

The role of the Director of Music  is to direct and develop the musical aspect of our worship, playing for worship but also encouraging others to play instruments and sing, working with the Vicar, Readers, choristers and instrumentalists, to the glory of God and for the extension of His kingdom.  An Occupational Requirement has been established for the post holder to be a practising Christian in accordance with the Equality Act.

Duties are:

  • directing the music at Sunday services; typically, two a month at 9.00 a.m., all 10.30 services, and one evening service a month; and at services for example on Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Harvest Festival, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day
  • playing the organ and piano
  • working with volunteers, as part of a music group
  • organising other musicians to increase participation
  • playing for additional services for which notice has been given, for which there will be an additional fee
  • being available to play for weddings and funerals, whenever possible, or notifying the minister if unable to play
  • choosing hymns, songs and music for worship, in support of the Vicar, whose final responsibility this remains
  • drawing on and developing a range of music for worship from across the Christian tradition and in keeping with the outcomes of the 2018 Parish Music survey
  • to lead, develop and grow the church choir, extending its membership and musical range, including the recruitment of children*
  • lead a weekly choir practice, except in the weeks after Easter and Christmas and during the month of August; and directing the choir in rehearsal and in worship
  • meeting regularly with the Vicar and Worship Team to plan worship
  • reporting to the Vicar, as line manager and annually to the PCC
  • reviewing music used in worship and keeping a formal/dated record
  • keeping records of music used in worship; recording and reporting to the copyright agencies
  • filing and storing music
  • arranging for the annual tuning and maintenance of the church organ
  • organising cover when on annual leave
  • any other duties commensurate with the role
