This year has been a time of change with Jo Mackriell leaving her post as Musical Director in November. The choir, though not having had regular rehearsals for quite a while, was involved in the Easter services last year and Jo lead the Choir for the Harvest Festival. We also had a Choir for both the Memorial and Remembrance Sunday services. At Christmas we had a substantial choir who rehearsed and took part in the Carol Service, which was a lovely event. The choir items included the ‘Advent Carol’ composed by Elaine’s friend Jane Jarvis, and had a descant played beautifully on the flute by Dawn. This can now be heard on Youtube! Sue Clifton has been a ‘star’ and taken on the role of choosing the hymns and songs for our regular Sunday acts of worship and has also been listing the music for copyright and licensing purposes. A big job! Thanks Sue. We now do have a choir to help lead the worship and singing at our weekly services as well as on Ash Wednesday and over the coming Easter weekend. Do join us if you can! We are looking forward to an exciting year ahead, musically, and for more involvement from anyone willing to come and “sing joyfully to the Lord!”
Although we have not led the Informal Worship as much recently, we have still played different instruments during some services eg on piano, guitar, flute & violin. We did so at the Duke of Edinburgh Awards’ service in January, the Folk Festival service at St Philip’s last May, as well as on other occasions. We hope to be doing more together in the future and it would be good to involve some of our talented young people in this. We want to encourage a close encounter with God through our music and worship, and for music to enhance, and not detract from, our experience of meeting with God and each other every week.
On another note…. sadly, we lost Dot Baker this year, a very loyal member of the church choir. It was an honour for us to sing at Dot’s funeral in February and she will be very much missed, not only for her singing, but also her companionship and sense of humour.
